Clear communication with subject matter experts (SMEs) is essential to successful instructional design. The role of an SME depends on the terminal objective or learning goal of a project. An SME may be a doctor of medicine, a machinist, a software engineer, or another professional from a different industry, depending on the content and performance outcomes being addressed.

Effective SME communication begins with clarity. Instructional designers should clearly define project goals, timelines, deliverables, and expectations for feedback from the start. Asking focused questions, confirming understanding, and sharing drafts early in the process helps ensure that expert knowledge is accurately translated into effective learning experiences. Maintaining professional and respectful communication builds trust and leads to stronger, more relevant training outcomes.
